From the Preface:Taking a stab at writing an introductory media studies textbook is ambitious, some might say, foolhardy, given the broad range of issues and subject matter this field encompasses. Such a foundation text has to be accessible, well organized, clearly written, and, most of all, engaging, thought-provoking, and conducive to class debate and discussion. This task is all the more daunting since the primary target readership is already absorbed and distracted by the very media under consideration.This very absorption and fascination open up opportunities for harnessing attention and directing it toward a greater understanding of how the communications media and the forces that shape their content affect people’s lives. What the media cover, how they cover it, and what they ignore may undercut the achievement of crucial matters such as climate control, universal healthcare, affordable housing, income opportunities, equitable taxation, and global conflict.At perhaps no time in our history has the systematic study of the content and contours of media messages within the context of the legal, political, economic, and cultural factors been more urgent and necessary. In unprecedented ways, politicians, propagandists, and peddlers of goods and services are all trying to affect the three-pound organ in our skulls. Comprised of cells called neurons, hundreds of billions of them, linked to one another in a vast network of brain tissue with more synapses or connections in a cubic centimeter than stars in the Milky Way. Our brain’s circuitry determines our hopes, fears, great ideas, stereotypes, prejudices, senses of humor, and desires, our very understanding that we even exist at all. When its synapses or neural connections change, so do we.
